Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club

Grange Road

Tel: 01223 354131

Founded in 1872, Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world. Unsurprisingly, it has had a profound influence on the game of rugby throughout its history, from helping to draw up the laws of the game in the 1870s to producing a plethora of the game’s most successful players; from providing a number of rugby’s most influential administrators to trialling new laws for the iRB.
CURUFC is a wholly amateur student rugby club which aims to create as professional an environment as possible for its players. The club maintains three principal teams – the Blues (1st XV), the LX Club (2nd XV) and the U21 XV, exclusively for undergraduates. It also has two development teams, the U21A XV and the Colleges XV, as well as 20 College teams who compete in league and cup competitions. All five University squads compete in Varsity matches against Oxford RFC, games which are the focus and pinnacle of each season. The U21 XV and Blues XV Varsity matches are played at Twickenham, the home of rugby, in early December. The Blues match attracts 30 000 spectators and a worldwide audience of 4 million people each year.
As well as the Varsity Matches, the club has a busy schedule of fixtures throughout the year. The Blues play against other University sides, services teams and the academy sides of professional clubs such as Saracens and Northampton. The LX Club and U21 sides also have weekly fixtures and an U20 development XV plays in the RFU U20 league in the new year.
The club’s ground is on Grange Road but is not open to the public on non-match days. However, visitors are warmly encouraged to attend a Blues match to see one of the country’s strongest amateur sides and to soak up the atmosphere and history of the ground. Fixtures can be found on the club website,
